The Evening Sandwich Program in the basement of the Universalist Unitarian Church of Waterville is a lifeline for Terri Cashman, 42, and her husband, who live in a garage.
City councilors on Tuesday also heard pleas for help to fund the Winslow Community Cupboard and Waterville Area Soup Kitchen whose officials said the number of individuals and families needing food has increased significantly.
An administrator for the Waterville Area Soup Kitchen told the council Tuesday the kitchen is serving 250 to 300 meals a day and demand for food is growing.
The Waterville Food Bank also continues to be open, and the St. John Food Pantry in Winslow is back open after having been closed for the month of March.
The college's Center for the Arts and Humanities chose 'Food for Thought' as its theme this academic year, so students will explore food-related issues from multiple perspectives in 16 classes.
