Mohamed Ibrahim had barely settled into life in Sudan's second city, months after he fled fighting in the capital Khartoum, only to discover the war had again reached his doorstep. "Seven months ago, when the battles intensified in Khartoum, I was displaced with my family to Wad Madani" 180 kilometres (110 miles) south, the 53-year-old said. Thousands of families had made the same move, and Wad Madani, the capital of Al-Jazirah state, quickly became a haven and a crucial hub for aid operations.

Violence in Sudan has spread to El Gezira state, southeast of the capital Khartoum, forcing more displacement and suffering as the civil war enters its ninth month. 

It was a year full of high-stakes geopolitical drama and economic crises for Africa.

Paramilitary forces established a base Sunday in the formerly safe city of Wad Madani in war-torn Sudan, an AFP correspondent reported, sending thousands fleeing, many of them already displaced. Thousands have sought to escape the former aid hub since the war between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) reached Wad Madani on Friday, according to the United Nations. But they faced prohibitive costs and other hurdles, according to AFP's correspondent.

The latest clashes between Sudan's army and paramilitary forces pose dire threats to civilians and relief efforts, the United States warned Saturday as it urged fighters to avoid an aid hub sheltering tens of thousands of people. Nearly half a million displaced people have sought refuge in Sudan's Al-Jazirah state, more than 86,000 of them in its capital Wad Madani, according to United Nations figures.
