The decision made late Wednesday night is being hailed as a victory for those in support of wearing masks, while state lawmakers against mask mandates are saying it reaffirms orders by the governor.
As masking in schools continues to be a hot debate, school board members in a number of local school districts have decided to make masking up optional for students and staff, except where federally required.
Students will still be required to wear masks while on school buses, in accordance with federal orders. Students who are enrolled in regional programs will also be expected to adhere to the rules of those campuses.
According to the new policy, masks will only be required on school buses or other school transportation vehicles subject to requirements from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
