john berman will be joining you along with don lemon. captions by vitac www.vitac.com it is hard to say good evening tonight, having seen the video footage authorities in memphis made public just a short time ago. i m john berman here in new york. and in memphis, i m don lemon. we appreciate you joining us for our special coverage. today, tyre nichols mom asked me a very simple question about her son s deadly encounter with police three weeks ago this weekend as a matter of fact. that question was, where was the humanity? three days later, her son would be dead from the beating he d received. ten days after that, five cops, members of a specialized now deactivated so-called spcorpion unit, were fired. yesterday all five were charged with murder. and now we have video of what they did, john. and this video comes from a variety of sources, body cams, a pole-mounted surveillance camera. we re not going to show any of it lightly. in truth, though, there is no amo ....

[ chanting ] this is the demand of protesters across the united states after the city of memphis releases the harrowing video of a fatal police beating. at the center of it all is this man, 29-year-old tyre nichols. we walk you through the clips of what he endured and where reform needs to begin. and a deadly shooting near jerusalem in a synagogue. across the united states we re seeing anger, we re hearing demands for change, but we re not witnessing the violent demonstrations many feared would come after the public saw those images. memphis officials released over an hour of video that started with traffic stop involving tyre nichols on january 7th. take a look. now there is already a lot of anger toward police over the incident with loud calls for reform. these protesters in memphis, for example, blocked a major bridge for a time, ....
with kim brunhuber. we re seeing a lot of anger across the united states this morning and demands for police reform, but all of it has been peaceful. the american cities were on edge that they might not be. this after the city of memphis released shocking police videos of the january 7th attack. in memphis, for example, protestors marched on to a major interstate bridge across the mississippi river bringing traffic to a standstill. no arrests. tyre nichols died three days after the violent encounter. he was just 29 years old. his funeral has been set for next wednesday. all five officers have been fired and on thursday they were charged with second degree murder, kidnapping and other offenses. arraignments are set for next month. we want to play some of the newly released videos. they are difficult and disturbing to watch and there s a lot of foul language. now we don t scenic cools being pulled over for alleged reckless driving but the first clip is from an officer a ....
. we re back now live from memphis, where protesters are out tonight in full force. some are on the i-55 bridge over the mississippi. cnn s sara sidner is there for us. sara, what are you see ing? reporter: we re seeing an absolute stand still. if you look behind me, you see these trucks here. that is the i-55 bridge southbound and northbound, northbound toward st. louis, southbound toward, jackson, mississippi. there is a huge section of i-55, the bridge included, that has just been stopped for quite some time. i want to give you a sense of what it looks like and where i am. this is exit 12b. apropos what s happening, the national civil rights museum is off that exit. this was the place where martin luther king jr. was assassinated, here in memphis. but what you are seeing is what protesters here call resistance. ....
