The moves come in the wake of the administration’s decision to approve ConocoPhillips’s Willow oil project in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska. The initiatives announced Wednesday target territory in northern Alaska, long prized for its oil and gas potential.
Officials from the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority criticized the U.S. Interior Department's cancelation of seven Trump-era oil leases in ANWR.
The move comes as the Biden administration seeks to expand protections against oil and gas development on public lands.
“With today’s action, no one will have rights to drill in one of the most sensitive landscapes on Earth,” said Interior Secretary Deb Haaland.
