Farmers have raised the alarm over the deplorable state of extension services in the country, manifesting in the ratio of one Extension Agent (EA) to 10,000 farmers (1:10,000).  They are angered that the EAs that are supposed to serve as platform for linking new innovations from research institutes to the farmers are no longer considered important unit in the agriculture value chain designed to diversify the national economy.  The United Nation Food and Agricultural Organisations (FAO) had recommended one EA to 800 (1:800) farmers and had even increased it to 1:1,000, but over the years Nig...

Many of us have been impacted in some way by an accident, injury or fatality that has occurred on the farm. These events are devastating to communities and affect the livelihoods of those we know and love.  University of Minnesota Extension and  North Dakota State University Extension are offering a series of farm safety webinars to encourage communities and individuals to prioritize safety on the farm. The webinar series will be held on Thursdays at 11 a.m., January through March. Each webinar will last one hour.

In the garden: Garden chores are year-round The Kansan Garden chores occur throughout the year.  One of these chores is pruning.  If you planted new fruit trees last year it is time to prune them to begin to shape them for maximum fruit production.  Remember fruit tree pruning is drastically different than pruning a shade or ornamental tree. Young fruit trees should be pruned to begin developing a strong structure of the main or scaffold limbs.
