An extremely rare male tortoiseshell kitten will be up for adoption at the Whanganui SPCA.
Twelve-week-old Herculine has already won the hearts of SPCA staff, with centre manager Francie Flis calling him their unicorn .
Tortoiseshells are defined by their two non-white colour combinations - black with ginger flecks, in Herculine s case - and they are almost exclusively female.
Males carry an extra X (XXY) chromosome and are often sterile, though in line with SPCA policy Herculine has been desexed. ....

In response to the current high demand for viral transport media, which has been intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic, Teknova has constructed dedicated new clean rooms, designed from scratch to meet the ISO 13485 and GMP standards required for production of its saline, VTM and ATM products. The company also invested in advanced, high-throughput automated lines, significantly streamlining the media production process. Vice President of Engineering, Jose Olague, said: “Automating the manufacturing process enabled us to rapidly scale up production from 300,000 to over 1 million tubes per week, and control contamination risks even more tightly.
