because of that kavanaugh vote. gardner in colorado is much lower hanging fruit for the party as it looks to 2020. you re in san francisco for the dnc summer meeting and i m wondering if there is much buzz there about the departures from the 2020 field or the decision by hickenlooper to run. what are you hearing there? what s the talk? reporter: i think for a long time, democrats here and elsewhere have been wondering when the field will begin thinning out. the theory was once you get into the september debates where the threshold to qualify was higher, candidates will have to face political realities. you saw that last night on the rachel maddow show. he was discussing yes didn t want to continue running for president and instead, he s running for a third term as governor for washington state. candidates are figuring out this is the time when things get tough. if you re not on the debate stage, to make your pitch to a national audience, it become more difficult to be one of the
impersonating a congressman at this point. i think it is one of those things that he d better have corroboration. michael cohen has very little credibility on the stand. the next things what is the crime? what are the elements of the sxrim does this support any of the elements? there was no transmittal of information during the meeting occurred or after the meeting as a result of that meeting. so finding a crime that makes this particular statement relevant is going to be a challenge. let me ask you this. what struck me about the explanations for this meeting, you ve heard this from donald trump jr., even the president himself said it, campaigns, any campaign would accept this kind of help. and donald trump jr. s explanation for yes didn t tell his father was that well, the russians didn t deliver this dirt on hillary clinton as promised. do you think a campaign should be interested in, willing to accept help from russia in the midst of a presidential election?
he said the assistant hit too soon because they misinterpret the his instructions and that resulted he is entangled in trying to explain yes didn t list the contacts. you just mentioned in that statement him wanting to leave the meeting with the russian lawyer. there was an e-mail that was sent so there is a paper trail where he says can you please call me on my cell? need an excuse to get away. he said that s because he walked into the meeting and immediately decided it was a waste of time, not that he decided there was something that was potentially problematic and that he needed to remove himself from the situation. and i will say from my reporting on how this is going talking to members of the committee privately, this is to a certain extent i think the opening that republicans who want to find a reason to defend the president are looking to give them. they re essentially saying, look, there couldn t be a collusion here because nobody was in any position to collude. everybody was d
i think as kim said, he couldn t have done much better then a did in that press conference. i think what he has going for him is that there is enough time between now and 2016 barring any further information coming out, showing that he was not telling the truthful there is enough time for i think voters to forgive him and for him to make up for this. what about the question of whether he took this issue seriously enough? he dismissed it for weeks. said there was nothing to it. a question of yes didn t dig into it at a deeper level earlier? instead took the word of his aides. is that an ongoing problem? being out there with the orange cones, stopping traffic. i think that actually probably speaks toward credibility here. one of the points he made in the press conference this week was i never would have joked about stopping the traffic if i knew that my people were actually involved. and in that way, i think why he seem credible, we ll learn in
