DVIDS - News - Kathryn Balonek Joins NAVFAC Washington as Head of Contracting

Kathryn Balonek, former contracting director for Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Far East, has assumed duty as NAVFAC Washington Contracting Business Line Leader.
Balonek began her federal career at NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic in Norfolk, Va. in 2006 as an intern in the Naval Acquisition Development Program before graduating to the role of contract specialist. In 2012, she moved on to serve as a contract specialist for NAVFAC EUAFCENT in Naples, Italy, and remained there for three years. She returned to the United States to work at Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a supervisory contract specialist for a year before returning to NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic in 2016, this time as Contracting Division Director, A&E, Construction and Utilities. In 2018, she took over as Contracting Director for NAVFAC Far East. ....

NAVFAC aerial building surveys take flight with UAV pilot program

A Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command Atlantic pilot program has, for the first time, used Unmanned Aerial Surveying (UAS) to assess structures at two Virginia locations.
The UAS Pilot Program took flight at the commandâs NSA Hampton Roads Lafayette River Annex (LRA) location, where the used unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology to assess the roofs of historic buildings, as well as facilities at Joint Expeditionary Base (JEB) Little Creek-Fort Story, Virginia.
The Department of Defense (DOD) is a primary developer of UAV technology and its uses but has rarely used it for facilities and installation-level work, making NAVFAC Atlanticâs pilot program a pioneering effort. ....
