JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — (TNS) The Missouri Senate started debating a plan this week to roll back direct democracy by making the votes of rural residents more powerful than urban
Missouri Senate Democrats filibustered efforts to bring a vote on legislation seeking to raise the bar for passing ballot initiatives in the state.
“We’re gonna be here to try to uphold democracy in the state of Missouri,” said Sen. Doug Beck, a St. Louis Democrat, before starting a filibuster against the proposal.
Democrats returned to the Senate floor Tuesday to again block action on a Republican-backed measure to limit constitutional amendments.
Republican lawmakers have pre-filed a score of bills seeking to change the initiative petition process in the new year.
