The principal of one of Hamilton's largest intermediate schools has this morning resigned after a three-year absence shrouded in secrecy.
Andrew Shortcliffe has not been seen at Fairfield Intermediate since taking extended leave in mid-2018.
His practising certificate expired in April this year, according to the Teacher Council of Aotearoa New Zealand's database.
The announcement of his resignation comes three years after the Ministry of Education appointed limited statutory manager Rob Naumann to oversee the school, which this year has a role of 622 pupils.

Fairfield Intermediate School is a large urban school in Hamilton catering for Years 7 and 8 and has a roll of 750 students.
“Having received his resignation, the board will now go into the process of appointing a new principal and the acting principal will remain as principal,” Naumann said.
Shortcliffe’s practising certificate expired in April this year, according to the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand's database.
Stuff understands he had bowel cancer in 2018 and suffered a leg injury not long after.
Naumann couldn’t confirm why Shortcliffe had been absent for so long or whether he had been on full pay the entire time.

Thousands of taxpayer-funded school lunches left uneaten by students

Stuff has lodged an Official Information Act request seeking numbers about the scale of uneaten school lunches across the country, but opposition MPs have already waded into the bunfight.
Act Party leader David Seymour has called the lack of rigour “irresponsible” while National’s Paul Goldsmith says the programme is “poorly targeted”.

But Education Minister Chris Hipkins has pushed back, maintaining the programme is necessary, and not “wasteful”.

Mackenzie van Kampen’s heart stopped twice during a procedure to remove blood clots from her heart in September 2020.
After an hour and a half of surgery – to remove two clots and insert stents – the news came that it hadn’t gone at all to plan.
Mackenzie’s heart had stopped twice, and the surgical team had to do an emergency chest opening and heart massage.
She would spend seven days on a bypass machine which did the work of her heart during the fortnight she was in the paediatric intensive care unit.
