Providing transitionary support during Covid-19 (5 photos)

The Thunder Bay Indigenous Friendship Centre is a place of support for many members of the Indigenous community. Providing services for ages zero – 100, their clients and families are receiving the support they need, especially during uncertain times.
By providing Indigenous based, culturally appropriate programs for children, youth and adults, clients can receive services specific to their age group.

A program for every age
Waabogonee, meaning flower that wakes up in the morning and blossoms throughout the day, is an EarlyON program for children up to six years of age and their parents and caregivers, allowing them to engage as co-learners and leaders in influencing positive child, family, and community experiences.

Wisdom: AWKE:GO supporting Indigenous youth and families

The Thunder Bay Indigenous Friendship Centre supports Indigenous youth and families from birth to adulthood and one of their many programs making a difference for Thunder Bay youth is the AWKE:GO program.
An Indigenously-based and culturally appropriate program for children ages seven to 12. AWKE:GO allows children in this age group to not be packed in with teenagers or feel like young children, the separation allows for appropriate growth and expression.

Programming goals
Before AWKE:GO came to fruition, the Thunder Bay Indigenous Friendship Centre led a group called Little Beavers but when funding had stopped it led to a cry out from the community for a more centralized and individualized program for youth in the Thunder Bay community.

FSIN says new federal budget a step in right direction

FSIN says new federal budget a step in right direction
The new federal budget is getting top marks from the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations.
In the budget which was released on Monday, the Liberals have pledged $18 billion over five years to improve the quality of life for people living in Indigenous communities.
Of this, close to $600 million over three years will be invested in mental health supports for Indigenous people.
FSIN Vice-Chief David Pratt said he is impressed that the government has taken a community-based approach with funding for mental health.
“It’s very important that capacity is built at the community level because each community – and I am very glad the federal government is not taking a one size fits all approach – but it has to be community-led, community-developed based upon each member nation’s needs and I think this fund will go a long way to address that,” he said.

Cindy Blackstock Is Still Fighting for Indigenous Kids

This live event features the salmon defender in conversation with coastal Indigenous leaders about our wild fish.

Then again, the 56-year-old Gitxsan professor of social work never expected that being a children’s champion would get her spied on by the federal government in 2010. Nor did she imagine that in early 2021 she’d still be fighting the same gruelling human rights case against the federal government that she launched in 2007.
That case, led by Blackstock’s First Nations Child and Family Caring Society and the Assembly of First Nations, alleged the federal government discriminates against Indigenous children by providing less funding and poorer services than it does for non-Indigenous children.
