Polarising Fiat Toro shows its facelift self in Brazil

Charl Bosch
Brazil's second best-selling bakkie after the Fiat Strada, the Toro remains forbidden for countries outside South America.
Facelift Fiat Toro in Ranch trim level
Second only behind the Strada as Brazil’s best-selling bakkie, Fiat has taken the covers off of the facelift Toro five years after its initial introduction.
Arriving after a small refresh in June last year, the more prominent tweaks to the controversially styled unibody double cab only Toro, whose sales count stands at over 335 000 units since 2015, comprises new headlights with thinner upper LED units, a new grille featuring Fiat’s new letter only logo, LED fog lamps and new alloy wheels with sizes from 16 to 18-inches.

GM Working On Compact Chevrolet Unibody Pickup

General Motors is working on a a new, compact Chevrolet unibody pickup. According to sources familiar with the project, the all-new model will be an indirect replacement for the Latin American-market Chevrolet Montana, which in some markets is named Chevy Tornado and Utility.

Growing Segment
The compact pickup segment was (arguably) initially created by the Chevrolet Montana. The model was later joined in South America by the Fiat Toro (also known as the Ram 1000 in Colombia) and the Renault Oroch. The segment will grow still in the near future.

The Ram 1500 Has A New 100-HP Baby Brother

Meet the new Ram 700 compact pickup.
The Ram 1500 is a staple of the full-size pickup truck segment in the US, but it doesn't suit everyone's needs. Ram doesn't offer anything smaller than the 1500 in the US, but it's a different story in Latin America and South America where you can buy the Ram 700, a smaller entry-level truck with a more affordable asking price.
It's based on the Fiat Strada pickup, which is also forbidden fruit in the US. A new version of the Strada was recently revealed for the 2021 model-year, so it was only a matter of time before the Ram 700 was updated. Think of it as the Ram 1500's new little brother.

Chile June 2020: Ram breaks into Top 10 in market stuck in hell (-68.5%) – Best Selling Cars Blog

July 8, 2020
The Fiat Toro is sold as the Ram 1000 in Chile.
The coronavirus pandemic has continued to worsen unabated in Chile, with total cases flaring up from 16.023 as of April 30 to 113.618 a month ago and 301.019 at the time of writing. As a consequence, a large part of the population and local economy remains under lockdown which continues to affect new car sales, down another -68.5% year-on-year in June to just 8.971 and at -45.1% YTD to 102.746. The June volume was made possible due to a growing trend towards non-contact sales channels (online or phone), especially in the communities under total quarantine, which has allowed buyers to receive their vehicles at home without contact and while complying with all sanitary measures. Regions where movement restrictions have not been imposed logically see smaller declines, such as Los Lagos (31.5%), Los Ríos (-40.5%) and Araucanía (-45.2%).

Potential Ram 1000 Pickup Spied For The US Market

Card image cap

Is there space for a Ram truck beneath the 1500?
Ram is on a roll with the current Ram 1500 being one of our top picks in the highly-competitive full-size truck arena. But with a growing number of competitors in the midsize segment, it's only a matter of time before the American truck maker looks at a smaller product. There's hope for that, as spy shots reveal the next-generation Fiat Toro undergoing testing - heavily camouflaged as is to be expected at this early stage of development. The US has never received the Fiat Toro, but in markets like Brazil, the compact pickup shares a platform with the Fiat 500X and Jeep Renegade. This makes it smaller than midsize trucks like the Ford Ranger. However, this may not be an issue, as we have previously reported on rumors of a 'Ram 700', a compact pickup based on the Fiat Strada.

Ram's new Toyota HiLux fighter takes shape: Dakota ute looks angry as hell as a Dodge-badged performance truck
21 May 2020 • 2 min read
Ram's incoming Toyota HiLux fighter is yet to be officially unveiled, but that hasn't stopped the wide world of web peeps imagining what the brand's Dakota will look like, and we're particularly in love with this new version.
This is the Dakota imagined as a Dodge performance truck, up to and including the bright red Brembo brake calipers and angry bulging bonnet. Now it must be said, this would be a smaller, Hyundai Santa Cruz-sized truck, rather than the proper mid-sized ute we've been promised.

What If The Ram Dakota Looked Like This?

A sporty truck with a Hemi engine sounds great to us.
As trucks and utility vehicles grab an ever-larger share of US new vehicle sales, Fiat Chrysler is thought to be readying a compact pickup for the market rumored to bring back the Dakota name, although there's some question as to what that will look like. Existing rumors have it that the new model could be a tiny little unibody thing related to the Brazil-born Fiat Strada - sold as the "Ram 700" in Mexico. Yet there's also some evidence to suggest that FCA is taking a look at bringing out a new Dodge Rampage coupe utility, possibly to be based on the Challenger.

Brazil April 2020: Chevrolet improves to 19.5% share in market down -76.8% – Best Selling Cars Blog

May 6, 2020
The new generation lifts the Chevrolet Tracker to its very first Top 10 finish.
Brazil is in the midst of a worsening COVID-19 crisis, and its new car market is down -76.8% year-on-year in April to 51.362 units, estimated to be the
lowest monthly volume in 27 years and pulling the year-to-date tally down -27.1% to 583.905. Local outlet Auto Informe however estimates that the real registration figure for April is 30 to 40% higher, as a new resolution passed in late March temporarily allows new vehicles new circulate without registration. Online sales have ramped up quite significantly in Brazil with all manufacturers aggressively coming to the party (see below) and this could definitely help with much needed sales over the coming months.

Ford's baby bakkie will have rugged look inspired by Ranger, Bronco

Ford's baby bakkie will have rugged look inspired by Ranger, Bronco

Earlier last year Ford’s global markets President Jim Farley confirmed that the company was working on a new compact pick-up truck that would slot beneath the Ranger, and now some new details are starting to emerge.
For starters, bakkie fans can look forward to a rugged design.
MotorTrend says its sources have indicated that the newcomer will be “anything but cute”, with styling inspiration likely coming from both the Ranger and the upcoming Bronco Sport SUV.
The latter is not to be confused with the actual Bronco, which will be a more rugged Wrangler-like SUV based on the Ford Ranger. The Bronco Sport will instead use Ford’s compact front-wheel-drive architecture that underpins the new Focus and Kuga models that have not been launched in South Africa. This means it will also be fairly closely related to the upcoming compact pick-up and the two could even be built in the same Mexican factory, MT reports.

Fiat ute gets air during TV interview

Now this video either captures a genuine mistake, a convenient prank opportunity or a complete set up, but either way it is an example of excellent composure and great hang time.
Captured during a report about road safety late last year, the video shows an interview with the municipal civil defense coordinator for the Romelandia district, Valmir Birkheuer, talking about the effects of signage and speed bumps on the roads in the area.
A suspiciously well timed Fiat Toro comes flying in at high speed, hits the speed bump behind him and launches itself impressively into the air. Landing quite heavily too, if the unpleasant crunching sound it emits is anything to go by.

Big dreams for the mini pickups we may never get

Urbanites looking for the perfect lightweight pickup truck might just love the Fiat Toro. It’s compact enough to park easily, it seats four comfortably and yet has an open box in the rear for carrying a load of decking material home from the lumber yard.
Alas, it remains forbidden fruit.
FCA, the company known for its full-size Ram pickups, says it has no plans to bring the Toro to Canada or the U.S. So, the Toro remains one of a half-dozen or more tantalizing compact utility vehicles that are good enough for places like Argentina, Brazil or Mexico but not offered here.

Fiat Building An Italian Cybertruck?

Fiat has been caught testing a new tiny pickup truck.
There's a good chance you've never heard of the Fiat Mobi. Launched in 2016, the compact five-door hatchback is available exclusively in South America, so it's never been sold in North America. Now, Fiat is expanding the Mobi range with a new small pickup truck, which has been spotted doing some cold-weather testing by our spy photographers.
Essentially, Fiat has just added a truck bed to the current Mobi in a similar vein to the Fiesta-based Ford Courier in Latin America. The prototype is heavily camouflaged, preventing us from getting a close look at the design details.
