Fake Chrome App Anchors Rapidly Worming 'Smish' Cyberattack


An ingenious attack on Android devices self-propagates, with the potential for a range of damage.
A new Android malware that impersonates the Google Chrome app has spread to hundreds of thousands of people in the last few weeks, according to researchers. The fake app is being used as part of a sophisticated hybrid cyberattack campaign that also uses mobile phishing to steal credentials.

According to researchers at Pradeo, the attack starts with a basic “smishing” gambit: Targets receive an SMS text asking them to pay “custom fees” to release a package delivery. If they fall for it and click, a message comes up asking them to update the Chrome app. ....

Financial sector saw a 125% increase in mobile phishing attacks during 2020

Researchers on Thursday reported that despite a 50% increase in mobile device management (MDM) adoption during the past year, average quarterly exposure to phishing attacks on mobile devices in the financial sector rose by 125% – and malware and app risk exposure increased by more than five times.
In a blog post, Lookout researchers said as more users access cloud services and infrastructure from mobile devices, attackers deliberately target phones, tablets and Chromebooks to increase their odds of finding a vulnerable entry point. The researchers said a single successful phishing or mobile ransomware attack can give attackers access to data across a company’s entire back-end infrastructure. ....
