"Application of numerical modeling in study of the behaviour of cable b" by Sina Anzanpour, Naj Aziz et al.

Over the past few decades, the rapid development of efficient mathematical algorithms and the increasing availability of powerful computers have made it possible to develop realistic constitutive models. With the development of highly sophisticated constitutive models, the Finite Element Method (FEM) has become an invaluable tool for predicting ultimate loads and the associated failure mechanisms. Consequently, more capable and realistic models can be developed to analyze and design various types of structures. This paper concentrates on the application of FEM model for better understanding of the behaviour of cable bolts under axial loading conditions. A detailed geometry of the pullout practice has been generated based on the previous laboratory pullout experiments. The interaction between the cable bolt and encapsulation material has been observed and compared with the experiments. Once the models were verified, the failure mechanism of the encapsulation material has been analysed. ....

"CRITICAL STRESS DISTRIBUTION ASSOCIATED WITH NONMETALLIC INCLUSIONS IN" by Eduardo Tovar, Hongtao Zhu et al.

Nonmetallic inclusions or their chain-like distribution could cause shattered rims, a typical rolling contact fatigue failure of train wheels. The advanced experiment and FEM simulation strategy were developed to investigate the critical stress distribution associated with nonmetallic inclusions in high-speed train wheels. It has been found that most of the inclusions in the studied high-speed wheel have a length smaller than 9 μm. Hard inclusions (Al2O3) cause a significant stress concentration at the poles, while soft inclusions (MnS) and voids trigger stress concentration at the equator. The inclusion cluster plays an essential role in stress concentration and fatigue performance. If alumina inclusions are chain-likely distributed along the radial direction of the wheel, it presents the risk for crack initiation and fatigue life reduction. Void clusters also potentially cause deep-surface damage to the train wheels. ....

"Pile group in clay subjected to cyclic lateral load: Numerical modelli" by Sanjay Nimbalkar and Sudip Basack

Major structures like offshore platforms, wind turbines, transport infrastructure, tall buildings, etc., resting on soft compressible clays, are often supported by pile foundations. Apart from usual vertical loading (dead load, live load, etc.), these piles are subjected to significant cyclic loads arising from actions of waves, ship impacts, winds or moving vehicles. Under such circumstances, the lateral mode of cyclic loading is predominant and affects the overall foundation stability. Such repetitive loading leads to stress reversal in adjacent soft clay initiating progressive degradation in soil strength and stiffness, deteriorating the pile capacity with unacceptable displacements. Although several past studies investigated the response of single pile under lateral cyclic loading, a detailed investigation on pile group in clay subjected to cyclic lateral loading, which is of immense practical interest to field engineers, is yet to be carried out. In this paper, in-depth study has ....
