Toxic Firefighting Foam Complicates Vermont Effort to Phase Out 'Forever Chemicals'

Many Vermont lawmakers say they are ready to ban the forever chemicals that have contaminated drinking water in parts of the state.
They have many reasons. In Vermont s best-known case, the chemicals known as PFAS contaminated hundreds of wells in Bennington after two former textile factories in the town baked them onto their products for years.
Elsewhere in Vermont, evidence of contamination has turned up in the leachate of lined landfills because discarded rugs, furniture and clothes break down, and the PFAS-based waterproofing on fibers washes away. ....

But Eric Howell’s dual titles of forest program manager for the Watershed Planning Section, and deputy administrator of the Colorado Springs Utilities Catamount Wildland Fire Team reflect CSU’s broad footprint in the state. 
It’s a mammoth effort to protect water sources from fire; Howell oversees a $1.5 million annual budget dedicated to ensuring forest health in the CSU watershed. Fire Tankers Often Grounded Due to Pilot Shortage: Cal Fire


These pilots fly S-2 tankers, two of which are based at the Ramona airport.
Cal Fire confirmed a Sacramento Bee report that up to six agency aircraft have been grounded at once due to staffing shortages this fire season.
According to the Bee’s report, an average of four of the state’s 23 tankers have been grounded on certain days in August due to a lack of trained, experienced and certified pilots.
Retired military and commercial pilot Denny Breslin told NBC 7 it’s no surprise there’s a pilot shortage at Cal Fire.
He said the demands of firefighting and this season’s relentless fire storms require long hours and cause significant job stress. ....
