Biomass turns to energy instead of ash

When Kevin McCully first came on as Payson’s fuels manager, he learned ash was a big part of his job.
“My first week on the job, Toby Waugh took me to the Blattner brush pit and told me the looming issue to fuel management was to find a different way to get rid of the biomass or a new place for a brush pit,” said McCully.
The Regional Payson Area Project (RPAP) developed the brush pits around 2001.
“RPAP was a collaboration between local, state, federal and county agencies and concerned citizens,” said McCully.
With annual support from the late District 1 Supervisor Tommie Martin, Rim Country has operated this system of brush pits from Payson to Pine to take trimmings private landowners generate as they clear and Firewise their properties. ....

Firewise helps Toulumne County residents prepare for fires

Wildfires pose a constant threat in California. In Tuolumne County, at least eight communities have ramped up efforts to protect themselves, their families, and their neighborhoods.Last year s Moccasin Fire devastated the county. It sparked around mid-August and burned 2,857 acres. For the families who live here, it s not a matter of if another wildfire will strike, it s when. For the sake of readiness, residents in the area joined Firewise, a national fire protection association that provides free tips and tools on safety measures and best practices. We have to be especially vigilant in this county. We definitely need to learn to live with fire, Karen Caldwell, a Firewise coordinator for the Tuolumne Highway 109 Fire Safe Council, said. It s really important that everyone does their part to reduce the risk to our homes, and our property, and our family. Caldwell helps neighborhoods become a part of the Firewise association. Some of the tips she shares with families include ....

Homes go up without fire-hardening code

In the shadow of yet another fire season in Payson, developers are racing to win approval to build homes without fire-hardened materials and design.
Payson sits in the middle of the world’s largest ponderosa pine forest, but the Payson council hasn’t adopted the fire-adapted building code already in place in Prescott and Flagstaff. Those fire codes don’t add to the cost of a house, but make it far more likely a community will survive the close approach of a wildfire.
Now, after years spent in a building slump — the pipeline for new home construction is filling up. Already, more than 400 homes are slated for construction in the town limits, with another 825 to be annexed into the town from the Doll Baby Ranch southwest of town. If built, those homes would increase the housing stock by about 5%. ....
