5th-grade students from schools within the Regional Office of Education #33 will be descending on Lake Storey Thursday for the 35th Ken Russell Outdoor Education Day. The Outdoor Education Day started in 1985 only taking one year off, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There will be over 50 Volunteer Presenters greeting over 500 fifth-grade students from Knox County Schools and their teachers while they rotate through eight different stations on outdoor and environmental education topics throughout the day. Some of the station topics include Aquatics, Renewable Resources Scavenger Hunt, Butterflies and Bees, Native American History, Nature Trivia, Weather, as well as the student favorite annual Fishing Station led by Al Hayden. Jodi Scott, Regional Superintendent of Schools for ROE #33, says she's proud to offer this great program that has been a tradition of the Regional Office of Education for many years. Mount Sinai Harbor dredging wraps up February 16, 2021, by Eldin Ganic Suffolk County’s Mount Sinai Harbor dredging project has officially been completed. The long-awaited dredging project began in December 2020 after the completion of the Town of Brookhaven’s project to repair the Mount Sinai Harbor jetties in May 2020. Plans for the dredging of the Mount Sinai Harbor began with resolution 2026-2011, co-sponsored by Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker, which allocated $2.1 million of the 2011 Capital Budget to the Suffolk County Department of Public Works (SCDPW) for the project. Due to the necessity of repairing the harbor’s jetties, the dredging project was temporarily halted until the town-owned jetties were repaired. In 2016, Legislator Sarah Anker sponsored resolution 2058-2016 to extend the earmark of the allocated funds until the project could be completed. ....
