The Doerr School announced the recipients of its first grants to fund greenhouse gas removal projects despite ongoing conservancy of accepting funding from fossil fuel companies.
In the months since the Doerr School of Sustainability’s founding, consistent calls have been made to reject fossil fuel funding in research as the school develops its vision for the future.
The new advisory council, which notably includes Bill Gates, John Doerr and John Hennessy, is set to advise the Dean of the Doerr School Arun Majumdar on the direction the sustainability school should take with new initiatives, programs and partnerships.
While many in the school consider the removal of greenhouse gasses an essential part of mitigating the effects of climate change, critics worry that the school’s first Flagship Destination is too closely tied to the interests of the oil and gas industry.
