Parfrey's Glen, Pewits Nest, Rock Island state parks to open for visitors again


In a sign of things slowly returning to normal, three popular state parks properties will reopen more than a year after they were closed, and visitors will again be able to scale observation towers and playgrounds in parks.
Parfrey s Glen and Pewits Nest state natural areas, both near Baraboo in Sauk County, opened quietly last week. The Department of Natural Resources officially announced their reopening in a statement Tuesday. The state natural areas were among the 40 parks that were closed last April due to overcrowding that led to social distancing concerns as well as problems with trash and vandalism.
Rock Island State Park, off the tip of Door County, will reopen May 28. The DNR closed the park last year in part due to social distancing concerns on the Karfi ferry that services the island, as well as damage to the island s dock, which had been submerged by high lake levels. ....

MADISON, Wis. – Spring has sprung. And with 49 state parks, more than 500 boat launches, 15 state forests, 44 state trails, over 5,000 campsites, and much more – your adventure awaits.
Starting April 30, the following changes will be implemented:
Observation towers and playgrounds will be open
Volunteer group sizes will be increased to 50 people
Capacity for open-air shelters, amphitheaters and outdoor group campgrounds will be increased to 100 people
Non-department led special event capacity will increase from 50 to 100. Special event permit applicants may work with property staff to phase larger events with capacities over 100.
Stand-alone concession facilities will open to the public at 50% capacity including staff

Five state hunters bag elk in 2020 season


Five Wisconsin hunters each successfully bagged an elk during last fall’s state issued tag system. Three were mature bulls and two others were legal bulls. Only bull elk could be taken.
The fifth and final elk was harvested on the 11th day of the season, which last year ran Oct. 17-Nov. 15 and Dec. 10-18.
Last year was the third Wisconsin elk hunt since reintroduction efforts began in the state about 25 years ago. It was also the first time elk hunting was open south of Wis. 70, including including portions of the Flambeau River State Forest in Rusk and Price counties. ....
