FLIGHT Lieutenant Abayomi Dairo of the Nigerian Air Force came into national and global reckoning recently. Bandits in the northern borders of Zamfara and Kaduna states had shot down the Air Force jet which he piloted. He had just emerged from an interdiction raid on bandits terrorising the northwestern part of the country when his plane came under intense fire from the outlaws. Dairo, in a gallant show of professionalism, effectively ejected from the airplane. The details of the survival instincts he deployed which brought him to safety and helped him to avoid being captured by the bloodthirsty bandits are ennobling. NAF Spokesman, Edward Gabkwet, had earlier revealed that the jet “came under intense enemy fire which led to its crash in Zamfara State”. Dairo was later to give details regarding how he ejected from the airplane, found shelter, and outwitted the terrorists who were on his trail before he eventually rejoined his military comrades. His rescue was largely ....

Terrorists' Rising Capacity and Dizzying Warfront Stories

The range of equipment with terrorists in the North requires a pragmatic response from the Nigerian state and not this charade from the Buhari government. This has always been my position. Unfortunately, this federal government is deliberately stalling for reasons so difficult to comprehend. The capabilities of the Nigerian military are persistently eroded by the terrorists’ range of equipment. It is dizzying seeing non-state actors with high calibre equipment and downing fighter jets. Why must this persist in a country with a legitimate government? The outlaws are evidently waxing stronger and controlling territories while the Buhari government goes about with chicanery that no Nigerian territory is under the control of the terrorists. A serious government should be truthfully worried and look towards foreign military consultants for help; not the celebration that followed Fligh ....

Air Force Chief: Threats by Bandits Require Robust Security Architecture

By Kingsley Nwezeh
The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, yesterday, said the present security challenges in the country required robust security architecture and a versatile air force capable of rapid air power deployment across the theatres of war.
Speaking against the backdrop of concerns that bandits and terrorists had acquired the capacity to bring down fighter planes, Amao, who was addressing troops in Maiduguri, Borno State, during the Sallah celebration said, the security threat confronting the nation required robust security architecture capable of rapid deployment of air power.
He allayed fears over the vulnerability of the fighter planes, insisting that the air force pilots were equipped for such encounters with adversaries hence downing of the war planes by bandits and insurgents were not regular occurrences. ....
