Grady. reporter: the faa reauthorization comes up every five years in congress, but there s an extra sense of urgency from lawmakers this time around because of those mass flight delays and cancellations that have been plaguing the airline industry for the better part of a year and a half to two years now. the the derepublicans and republicans and democrats in the house worked together this week to pass a bipartisan bill. it includes provisions to better provide refunds to passengers caught up in flight problems, high more air traffic controllers and raise the pilot retirement age from 65 to 67. republicans say the bill tackles problems the transportation secretary should have done more to fix. we believe our faa bill will be able to solve some of these things that he has refused to solve as we look forward and look to the pooch to make a air travel safer. reporter: transportation secretary pete buttigieg is defending his track record. fliers are better off now ....

West virginia. this morning we had 3 1/2 inches fall on the south side of chicago. flash flood warning there. numerous flight problems. you can see the three to six inches of rainfall in that region. we ve got almost a two-hour delay in new york. that s the second go-around today. about an hour out in denver. over 6,000 delayed flights today on top of the 7,000 yesterday. now we just topped 900 in cancellations. it s a lot going on. it s a mess. summer heat also still battering the country today. today alone, over 70 million people are under heat alerts. what can you tell us about that? well, a lot of times when you have these heat domes and we ve been watching them meander around the u.s. all summer long. on the periphery of these where you get some of those stronger storms, but again it is the heartland of the u.s., southern california and the northeast. boston tying a record yesterday and today. they dropped down in the 60s wednesday, but the heat is going to continue to bake in ....
