Stolen Canadian flags prompt questions about how to mark Canada Day this year

Some of the stolen flags were provided by the Rotary Club of Oak Bay to raise funds for charitable causes, police said.
Joan Peggs, chairwoman of the flag program for the club, said at least 50 flags have been stolen. The flags are installed at about 600 homes across Greater Victoria every Victoria Day, Canada Day and Labour Day. They stay up for five to seven days before the club removes them until the next event.
The money raised through the program supports literacy projects, a school therapy dog and housing services, among other projects, she said.
“The flags cost $25. And so the money that we would have raised to to do community projects, we now will be using to replace these flags so that we have enough for our Labour Day installation,” she said.

Victoria council to discuss renaming Trutch Street

Victoria councillors Ben Isitt, Jeremy Loveday and Sarah Potts, and Mayor Lisa Helps, are proposing changing the two-block stretch of Trutch Street to Truth Street. Councillors are expected to discuss the proposed name change Thursday.
Isitt said the idea of a name change has been around for the past decade and many community members have expressed an interest in removing Trutch’s name from the city street.
“He lived on this Island for a relatively short period of time. His contribution in public life had a devastating impact on Indigenous people, and so it makes no sense to me that the City of Victoria would choose to honour a municipal asset after this individual, he said.

Ancestral human remains discovered near Dallas Road during wastewater-project work

Construction in the area where the remains were found is on pause while the CRD works with the Songhees and Esquimalt First Nations, Elizabeth Scott, deputy project director for the core area wastewater treatment program, said in a statement. Construction continues in other areas.
The CRD is in compliance with the Heritage Conservation Act, which facilitates the protection and conservation of heritage property in the province, Scott said.
The CRD did not say exactly what had been found.
“Out of respect we won’t be providing more information at this time,” Scott said in the statement.
David Jack lives near the site and walks past it most days, often chatting with people working on the project. On Monday, when he walked his dog past the site around Dallas Road and Eberts Street, he saw a group of people gathered around something, and one worker told him they had found some bones and that an archaeologist had been called.
