Trust between Worcester’s Latinx community and public schools must be rebuilt to improve outcomes for students, families, report finds

For Latinx families and students to thrive in Worcester, there must be accountability and rebuilt trust between the community and the Worcester Public Schools, officials said.
Leaders in Worcester have spent more than a year analyzing data and the community to make recommendations to improve achievement for Latinx residents, who make up about 21% of Worcester’s population and 43% of students enrolled in the Worcester Public Schools.
In an effort to respond to concerns about Worcester’s Latinx community, Mayor Joe Petty tapped Quinsigamond Community College President Luis Pedraja and Mary Jo Marion, the assistant vice president for urban affairs and the Latino Education Institute at Worcester State University, to head up the Commission on Latino Advancement and Education, which led to a newly-released re ....

Lauren Poe: Guaranteed income provides a path out of poverty


It has never been a single person’s ambition to live in poverty. Every family desires to live in a decent house in a safe neighborhood, and have food on the table and a reliable way to get to a job with a fair wage.
But for too many families, this humble version of the American dream is impossibly out of reach. The reason is simple: they do not make enough money. They work hard, often at multiple jobs far exceeding 40 hours a week, but it does not add up to enough by the end of the month.
The consequences are dire. Families living in poverty have significantly lower health outcomes and life expectancy, and children have a 90% likelihood of experiencing speech, learning or emotional development challenges, and a higher likelihood of being arrested and incarcerated. Racial income and wealth gaps continue to grow, made worse by the pandemic’s disproportionate toll on Black and brown communities. ....
