It has never been a single person’s ambition to live in poverty. Every family desires to live in a decent house in a safe neighborhood, and have food on the table and a reliable way to get to a job with a fair wage. But for too many families, this humble version of the American dream is impossibly out of reach. The reason is simple: they do not make enough money. They work hard, often at multiple jobs far exceeding 40 hours a week, but it does not add up to enough by the end of the month. The consequences are dire. Families living in poverty have significantly lower health outcomes and life expectancy, and children have a 90% likelihood of experiencing speech, learning or emotional development challenges, and a higher likelihood of being arrested and incarcerated.
