Prior to leaving The Voice US, Levine came under fire for appearing to favour one of his team members, Reagan Strange, over DeAndre Nico, despite the fact that the former was too unwell to perform. During one particular episode, viewers pointed out that he was using the time he'd been allocated to discuss Nico's act to campaign for votes for Reagan.
