Bid Launched to Clean Up London s Vital Artery as Thames Collaboration Launches
Commercial River Traffic to Reduce Pollution Levels
UK – Those with memories as long as some of our venerable senior staff (
do you mean aged? Ed) will recollect the River Thames being a much dirtier waterway than it currently is. There remains however much work to be done and, in addition to a variety of schemes to exclude run off water and effluent from the river, a new collaboration aims to take things further forward.
GPS Marine claims the title of the biggest commercial vessel operator on the Thames, and now the Rochester based company has cemented its partnership with Green Biofuels to utilise that organisation’s GreenD+ product, a process begun last year when it fuelled the Thames Tideway Tug pulling barges to one of London’s largest construction projects, the new ‘Super Sewer’, itself designed to further purge the river. ....

Northern Irish Border Situation Needs Resolution
UK – EUROPE – If anybody was under the misapprehension that the controversies surrounding the UK s exit from the EU in January meant the end of the matter, they must by now be sorely disappointed.
To add to the conflict a new study from international delivery specialist ParcelHero opines that the current state of affairs could ‘leave a £5.25 billion black hole created by lost trade and increased costs.’ Further problems are the potential legal action being considered by the EU over the UK’s unilateral decision last week to extend the grace period covering new checks on parcels and food shipments to Northern Ireland. ....

Mandatory Unilateral Transport Revisions Can Kill Companies
UK – As anticipated the unilateral changes imposed on London by Mayor Sadiq Khan have won few friends in the road haulage community. The mandatory Direct Vision Standards (DVS) and Low Emission Zone (LEZ) extensions cause problems, particularly for vehicles not native to the city, many bringing essential supplies from overseas.
With both DVS and the updated LEZ imposed from 1 March transgression can result in draconian penalties with charges of £550 per day for HGVs not conforming to the new TfL ‘Star’ system for vehicle cabs with adequate all round vision, while the LEZ is causing problems best illustrated by the following open letter sent directly to the Mayor by Mike Parr, Managing Director of Perishable Movements Ltd (PML). ....
