Local Triad activist and community leader reacts to Derek Chauvin verdict


We re hearing from a local activist just a few hours after Derek Chauvin was found guilty in the death of George Floyd.The jury deliberated for about 10 hours. Winston-Salem Activist Frankie Gist told WXII 12 News, this felt like the longest he’s ever had to wait for anything in his life. After Derek Chauvin was found guilty on all counts, activist and community leader Frankie Gist said that was the moment he had been waiting for. Former Minneapolis police Officer and now convicted murderer Derek Chauvin was then led away in handcuffs. Chauvin was convicted on all three counts, second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. “I had confidence in my god above that he was not going to no longer allow us to go through these injustices. I’m at a point where I’m like we can t afford this anymore, so I was scared a little bit but at the end of the day I knew for a fact that I knew we are going to win,” said Activist Frankie Gist. ....

Winston-Salem shutdown deadline at homeless encampment


Note: The video above aired before the city declared how it would handle the midnight Friday deadline.Winston-Salem officials announced enforcement will not be used to remove individuals at a homeless encampment after the shutdown deadline at midnight Friday.In a wooded area near the corner of Akron Drive and Patterson Avenue is a homeless encampment where about 10 to 20 people lived as of Thursday. As of Friday, there are about 10 people still there, according to the Winston-Salem City Council.Activists said they want to see the city do more to help out the people living there while the city said their goal is to provide them housing. The city said so far they’ve managed to help multiple people who were living there move to the Cities with Dwellings winter shelter. Activists said the city needs to offer more resources.
