Bath-set buddy copper caper McDonald & Dodds (ITV) is another entry in the hit parade of breezy murder mysteries that land with all the impact of cucumber sandwiches and tea from a flask. Having overcome the challenges of shooting through Covid, the series returned in winningly silly fashion with the first of three new feature-length episodes. It found Tala Gouveia and Jason Watkins striking a cheery tone as the eponymous mismatched detectives fighting crime on the mean streets of Somerset. ....

Set in picturesque Bath, the ITV series pairs feisty DCI McDonald (played by Tala Gouveia), who has recently transferred from London’s Met Police, with the unassuming DS Dodds (Jason Watkins), who has been happily in the background for most of his working life. To McDonald’s surprise they form an unexpectedly effective crime solving partnership and in the latest episode investigated a person s fall and death from a hot air balloon while flying with four friends. ....

For audiences watching the old-fashioned way, as it is broadcast on television, it could not stand as more of a contrast to BBC One’s Bloodlands, its main opponent in the schedules.
