Veterans Newark doctor saves Hideki Tojo's life in World War II

The Newark Advocate reported in early September that three local men had "probably paraded the streets of Tokyo" with the First Cavalry Division. The three men were listed as Lieutenant John "Pete" McFarland, Fred Hoffman, and former Newark physician Captain James B. Johnson, a surgeon with the First.
