The blood supply has always fluctuated within the state of Hawaiʻi, but the situation was dire on Easter weekend when there was only a day-and-half worth of type O blood.
A recent uptick in hospitalizations and the need for O-type blood at local hospitals have the Blood Bank of Hawaii calling for more blood donations.

The nonprofit said it’s currently down to a half-day supply of Type O because of recent increased need.
Mayor Bissen is partnering with The Blood Bank of Hawaiʻi to honor more than 45 donors on Wednesday, March 22 at 8 a.m. who have made at least 100 lifetime donations. Blood Bank of Hawaiʻi will also host a blood drive for Maui residents, Wednesday, March 21-23 at the Cameron Center in Wailuku.
