Today’s article is by Sherry Robinson, the author of “I Fought a Good Fight: A History of the Lipan Apaches.” When the government created a reservation for Mescalero Apaches in southeastern New Mexico in 1873, near Fort Stanton, it soon drew to it Lipans and a group the Spanish called Llanero Apaches. The Army and Apaches alike hoped for peace, but the agency and post trader were swindling the government and the Indians. Blankets failed to arrive; food was spoiled.
