Planning is underway for the first community refrigerator in the Cape Fear region.
The fridge, which will be located in Carolina Beach, will offer free fruits, vegetables and other perishable foods to those in need. A group of volunteers will monitor the safety and quality of the food inside the fridge on a daily basis, said Lisa Overby-Dosier, the project s organizer.
This would be the first community refrigerator in the Wilmington area. There are at least two other community fridges in North Carolina: One in Charlotte and another in Banner Elk near the border of North Carolina and Tennessee.
The Freedge Learning Network has provided Overby-Dosier with resources about establishing community refrigerators. ....
