Iris Telling celebrating her 100th birthday A care home has been in a celebratory mood after recently marking the 100th birthday of one of its residents. Iris Telling, who lives at Friars Mead in Kings Langley, was treated to a socially distanced garden party - and her two sons and brothers were able to meet for the first time in over a year. The three-layered cake was provided by Waitrose, who also sent Iris a card, and fellow residents watched on from the comfort of their lounge and ‘delivered’ their own cards and good wishes. Iris also received many bunches of flowers, which were spread around the home at her request so that everyone could enjoy them.

Luther Blissett with the blanket knitted by Des Hodges A 95-year-old Watford fan received “one of the best birthday surprises he’s ever had” after Hornets legend Luther Blissett personally collected a blanket that was knitted for him. Des Hodges took up the activity around a year ago and has been selling them to help raise money for an end of Covid party that is being planned where he lives at Friars Mead Care Home in Kings Langley. Des’ daughter Maureen Hastie put a couple of the blankets on Facebook to see if anyone would be interested in buying one. A number of orders were placed, one of which was from Luther’s partner Lauren Fox who asked for a blanket in Watford’s colours.

Care home resident Elsie Thomas was given a special visit by her family through a window during her 100th birthday. Elsie, who lived locally for over 70 years, spent her day dressing up, unwrapping presents, and taking video calls from several family members and friends. She kept a busy lifestyle in Kings Langley, as growing up she worked in the village shop and was an active member of All Saints Church and the WI. In her pastime when she was younger, she could be seen on her bike cycling up and down the village hill. Friars Mead, a residential care home in Kings Langley, put all their efforts in to make the day extra special and enjoyable despite lockdown restrictions.
