Junior Olyvia Snyder picked up where she left during the 2020 high school season, as the 2020 slalom state champion won the Copper Mountain slalom competition on Wednesday, ahead of fellow Tiger teammates Paige Peterson (third place) and Victoria Uglyar (seventh). Tiger Jenna Sheldon raced well and was in second place but straddled the last gate in one of her runs and was disqualified. Snyder’s showing led the Tigers to a victory over rival Aspen, who finished in second place. ....

Neither did senior wrestler Gio Marquez. “It’s a close contact sport basically it’s impossible to avoid contact,” Marquez said. “Honestly, when I heard the season was happening I was surprised and excited. … Before, when I thought the season wasn’t going to happen, it was bad, because it’s my senior year and I wanted to wrestle. In that regard, this has made me happier and more joyful.” ....

Bechtel said it was encouraging that Team Summit was able to host its first race series of the season at Breckenridge Ski Resort on Monday, Jan. 11 and Tuesday, Jan. 12. Bechtel described the race season as “normal, just being run a little bit different.” Bechtel said Team Summit mogul skiers were also able to compete in Aspen this weekend, their second competition of the season. The organization’s snowboard and freeski athletes are the most affected by the cancellation of the national competition. Team Summit Snowboard Program Director Matt Voegtle said the USASA’s regional and Futures Tour contests will keep many of his snowboarders busy through the season. ....

Summit County officials shared the latest information on the county’s novel coronavirus vaccine rollout and case numbers at the virtual Board of Health meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 22. Summit County Public Health Director Amy Wineland said the county received 900 doses in its first shipment of the Moderna vaccine on Tuesday. Wineland said the development was great, as it will enable the county to vaccinate the remainder of unvaccinated local health care workers before moving into Phase 1B, where the county will vaccinate out-patient health care providers, first responders and law enforcement members before adding more vaccination slots. ....
Photo by Jason Connolly / From Summit Daily Archives Summit County officials reported a coming expansion to other local industries for the state’s 5 Star Business Certification Program on Tuesday, Dec. 22, after the program allowed more than 100 county restaurants to reopen indoor dining amid level red restrictions. Barring an uptick in the county’s COVID-19 case rate, the five-star program will expand to gym, fitness and yoga studio businesses beginning Monday, Dec. 28, said Summit County Public Health Director Amy Wineland. She said these businesses should be able to begin applying for the program on Monday. The application process for recreation businesses will be the same as restaurants, where businesses apply through their towns, with the towns responsible for completing business inspections. Summit County Manager Scott Vargo said all towns in the county are on board for this expansion of the program. ....
