To airlift food and supplies. reporter: exactly. there are about a dozen towns in vermont that are essentially cut off. so many places in this state are linked by a seasoningle road or bridge and there are over 250 bridges and roads that have been essentially washed out, severely damaged across the state. this area that i m in now is about as bad as it gets. this pile of mud has been brought here by a front end loader from the backyards of the homes over there. they don t have it nearly as bad as this particular house here which is as you can see about to fall into this river. the entire first floor of it, the corner of it here was completely ripped away by this water. and when you think about this, this water shouldn t be here. this used be a babbling brook that was over in that direction about 100 yards or so, but the river has literally pushed down in this direction, turned and eroded this part of what used to be a street. so, whether that s going to stay there or not is anybody s ....

international, who are watching our special coverage of hurricane irene, a category 1 storm, a massive storm that is on its move, up the eastern seaboard. it came ashore a couple of hours ago, making landfall near camp lookout, north carolina. there s new video we are getting from nearby, atlantic beach shows you what irene has left behind already in some areas. the hurricane storm surge swamping the town with ocean water. also, irene is spinning its way northward to some of the biggest cities on the eastern coast of the united states. cities like new york, washington, baltimore, boston, cities that aren t used to being prepared for a hurricane. they could all get slammed by this storm this weekend. right now, irene, a category 1 storm, it is pushing sustained winds of about 85 miles an hour. irene has also claimed at least one life in north carolina. we do have special hurricane coverage for you this morning that spans that coastline, from north carolina all the way up ....

The blasted rock, the roof collapsed. we hope he s on the other side of the rock. they are digging out the rock from the top of the mine that collapsed down into the hole that they were already in. one miner out and another still in there. they ve brought in a front-end loader to scoop this up. they have miners down there getting rocks out but the first 20 feet have been pretty good and then all of a sudden the rocks on top not doing so good. so they are shoring it up, holding it up, but now they have this remote control vehicle that can stand back here and dig out the rocks with it without, hey, if the rock falls on the truck, so what. that s going to help out a lot. this is ironic. they are not digging down 6,000 feet. they are taking this machine in pieces down 5900 feet. okay. reassembling it down there. why? because it s too large? it s too big to go into the elevator. they are going to try to get this guy out with the ....

reporter: marek is trapped in the idaho silver mine. they have dug through 37 feet of earth in what is called the lucky friday mine. they ve been working around-the-clock since friday when a roof of the tunnel a mile underground collapsed. so far rescuers have not made contact with the miner who is trapped, however you can bet that they are hoping on marek s 30 years of mining experience will prove to be a lifesaving experience. that and the start up of what they call the digging machine, it s a front end loader modified for mining, and called a mucker. this will allow rescuers to work faster and more safely. the remote control mucker is on its way down to the miner and is being reseam -bld. they hope to have it up and running today. we ll keep you posted. the company that owns this mine says the digging machine will be able to move material without needing all the additional ground support to insure the ....
