Eurobites: OneWeb bags more funding from SoftBank, Hughes Network Systems

OneWeb, the satellite communications company jointly owned by the unlikely combo of the UK government and India s Bharti Gobal, has secured additional funding from SoftBank Group and Hughes Network Systems, bringing OneWeb s total funding to $1.4 billion. OneWeb was declared bankrupt in March 2020, but in July the British government and Bharti said they would each invest $500 million in the operator to build a satellite-based navigation system that can be used as an alternative to Galileo, a European Union project, following the UK s departure from the EU. Finland s Elisa has agreed to acquire CamLine, a German supplier of software to manufacturing industry, with a view to becoming a significant player in the smart-factory sector. The deal will combine Elisa s strengths in data analytics and artificial intelligence with CamLine s software expertise, which already has a presence in 350 factories worldwide.
Similarly pooling their knowledge are Nokia and Kalmar, the latter a big name in cargo handling. The pair say they are expanding their existing collaborative activities to provide new offerings for ports and terminal operators wanting to further automate operations and increase productivity.
