Surreal seems an understatement when describing Tap Temple in Jinan, North Jeolla Province. When you first arrive at this temple, it feels like you're stepping onto a different planet. In fact, it almost feels like you’ve landed on the moon.
I've been twice bitten while visiting Beopju Temple before. In 2011, the batteries in my old camera ran out and then a lightning storm struck. Then in 2015, I visited the temple with a less-than-enthusiastic travel companion who wanted to wrap things up to see something more “exciting.” So this third time around this past summer, I made sure that the skies were clear, the batteries were fully charged and I had a travel companion as excited as I was to visit Beopju Temple.
Seeing all of the temples in South Korea would take forever, so we narrowed it down to five “must-sees” to get you started.

You might not know the name of the statue. And you might not know the name of the temple where the statue is housed. In fact, you might not even know the city or the province where you might find this historic national treasure. However, once your eyes meet the “Stone Standing Maitreya Bodhisattva of Gwanchoksa Temple” you can't help but feel its peaceful paradoxical peculiarity.
