The Brexiteer made the plea as Parliament backed Boris Johnson’s historic trade deal with the EU.

The Bill will now go to the Queen for royal assent, with an announcement expected around midnight.

The UK offshore oil and gas industry has welcomed the deal outcome between the EU and the UK as the EU (Future Relationship) bill is voted on in parliament today. The leading representative body for the sector - OGUK - said that as the detail of the agreement is worked through, it is important that any friction and red tape is kept to a minimum whist ensuring it also reinforces the opportunity to pursue an exciting energy future.

The Government tabled a motion to allow the recess to run until January 11.

Late on Wednesday evening, Parliament’s upper chamber, the unelected House of Lords, also backed the deal. It is now officially UK legislation, with Queen Elizabeth II formally giving it royal assent in the early hours of Thursday morning. The UK left the EU almost a year ago but remained within the bloc’s economic embrace during a transition period that ends at midnight Brussels time, 11pm in London, on Thursday.
