The Harte Research Institute at TAMUCC builds new recycled reef The Harte Research Institute and last updated 2021-07-20 21:22:25-04 CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas â The Hart Research Institute at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi announced they have been working with several partners to create nearly three acres of restored oyster reef off Goose Island State Park. Oysters play an important role improving water quality and providing habitat for fish and other sea life. Experts estimate 90 percent of native oyster reef habitats have been lost due to harvesting efforts and dredging of oyster reefs. âA lot of people love to eat oysters, but they often donât realize what an important role they play in our environment,â said Gail Sutton, HRI associate director and co-founder of the instituteâs Oyster Recycling Program, Sink Your Shucks. âTheyâre the water treatment plants of the bays. One oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water a day.â ....

Saturday morning, workers with Gulf Coast Growth Ventures-Exxon Mobile, partnered with the Harte Research Institute to help work on a reef restoration project using recycled oysters. Several master and doctoral students placed time trials to see how efficient the oyster bags were and recycled the oysters back into the water to help restore the reef. Of course, oysters are filter feeders so they clean our bays and waters plus they re kinda the happening place under the water. The fish like hanging out there, crabs, and seagrass grow better, so these students are studying the habits of the animals and we re trying to make an environ ....
