Astronomers conducted an elaborate and sensitive survey of a large portion of the Milky Way galaxy using two of the world’s most powerful radio telescopes. They were able to detect previously unseen tracers of huge star formation, a process that controls galactic ecosystems. GLOSTAR image, using data from both the VLA and the Effelsberg radio telescope, shows a segment of the Milky Way's disk, revealing previously unseen tracers of massive star formation. China's FAST discovers 201 pulsars 1 China's Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST) (Photo/China News Service ) (ECNS) -- China's Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST) has discovered 201 pulsars, including some faint ones, in the Galactic Plane Pulsar Snapshot (GPPS) survey, the National Astronomical Observatories of Chinese Academy of Sciences said on Thursday. Discoveries of the research, led by Professor Han Jinlin of the National Astronomical Observatories, were publis...
Signs of PeVatrons in Gamma-Ray Haze April 5, 2021• Physics 14, 41 A diffuse glow of high-energy gamma rays hints at the presence of powerful cosmic accelerators, called PeVatrons, within the disk of our Galaxy. Tibet AS m AS experiment detects high-energy gamma rays by observing showers of particles produced when the gamma rays hit molecules in Earth’s atmosphere. The 70-Year-Old Mystery of Two Galactic Mushroom Clouds Giant bubbles hovering over the Milky Way seem to be remnants of an ancient explosion. Jeremy Sanders, Hermann Brunner and the eSASS team (MPE); Eugene Churazov, Marat Gilfanov (on behalf of IKI) When Peter Predehl, an astrophysicist at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Germany, first laid eyes on the new map of the universe’s hottest objects, he immediately recognized the aftermath of a galactic catastrophe. A bright-yellow cloud billowed tens of thousands of light-years upward from the Milky Way’s flat disk, ...
