Woman charged with theft at Walmart; GPD investigating serial shoplifter

Galesburg Police on Saturday responded to Walmart for a report of theft. Asset Protection Employees at the store observed three individuals, who had previously committed retail thefts in the past, as they would only scan certain items at the self-checkout. A 55-year-old man, a 53-year-old woman, and a 35-year-old woman were stopped by employees after they reached the final point of sale at the store. The three were being uncooperative with employees and refused to go to a back office. The three, instead responded to the Customer Service counter. After police arrived, officers had the suspect view the security video which showed the 53-year-old woman not scanning all of their items. The trio were attempting to steal a little over $100 worth of goods. The 53-year-old woman was placed under arrest and was charged with Retail Theft. GPD and Walmart officials are also investigating after a string of shoplifting incidents involving male suspect continually coming into the store and stealing trading cards. The male suspect stuffs unopened trading cards into a Walmart bag he pulls from his pocket and then departs the store each time.

Gun found in rental car; gun and cash stolen from Galesburg residence

Galesburg Police on Saturday responded to Enterprise Rent-A-Car in Galesburg after a gun was found in a vehicle. GPD recovered the 9mm Ruger from an SUV with Colorado registration rented out recently to a Colchester woman. The owner of the firearm has an active and valid FOID card and the gun was returned. Police are also investigating after a 50-year-old Galesburg man, after offering a stranger a ride, was robbed the following night. The man said he picked up an unknown man on Berrien Street on Thursday and invited he and an unknown woman over to his house. The three "hung-out" the following night as well. When the two unknown subjects left the man's house the second night, the man discovered $800 and a 9mm firearm were missing. The two subjects denied taking the man's property. Their names did not come up in any police database. The investigation is ongoing.

Woman calls 911 for a broken leg that was instead a gunshot wound

Galesburg Police on Tuesday were dispatched to the 400 block of South Soangetaha Road in reference to an unknown medical call. Dispatchers informed police a female caller reported her friend had broken her leg and was bleeding. Police met with the 26-year-old female victim who had a blood-soaked towel wrapped around her leg. She said she and her friend were walking in Kiwanis Park when they heard a loud "bang" and the woman's leg was bleeding. Paramedics then informed the woman that the victim did not have a broken leg - she was shot. She was taken to OSF St. Mary's Medical Center. The victim would not offer any further information to police. The victim also wouldn't let officers photograph her injury. Officers attempted to locate any shell casings at Kiwanis Park but found none. The family and friends of the victim were also uncooperative with police. The investigation is ongoing.

Convenience store employee facing theft charges for stealing lottery scratch tickets

Galesburg Police on Saturday responded to the Becks gas station on East Main Street for a report of a theft from a few days prior. Officers arrived and met with a store manager who said one of her employees was caught taking lottery scratch tickets while working their shift. The employee reportedly took approximately $310 worth of scratch-off tickets and did not pay for them. Officers then viewed a security video of the employee taking a variety of tickets and attempting to cash them out. The manager told police they agreed to let the 33-year-old male employee pay the store back, but a couple of days had passed, and they wished to pursue charges. Officers were unable to locate the male employee at any of his listed addresses. He was added to the GPD's pending arrest list and is facing a charge of Theft with Intent to Deprive.

Unknown man steals 12 ($1,400 worth) purses from Marshall's

Galesburg Police on Sunday afternoon responded to Marshall's on National Boulevard in Galesburg for a report of shoplifting. Police arrived at the store and met with a female employee and a customer that witnessed the theft and called 911. The female customer told police a man, approximately 5'6" dressed in all black took a bunch of purses and then ran out of the store without paying for them. The customer followed the man to the parking lot and took a picture of the man's vehicle - a gold Chevrolet truck with a topper. The woman also had the man's license plate. An employee said the purses were from the "high end" aisle - in that they were $129 apiece. A total of twelve purses were stolen totaling around $1,400. At the time of the police report, officers were awaiting security video of the incident. Police were also to follow up at the registered address of the unknown man's truck. The investigation is ongoing.

Galesburg man charged after not paying for groceries at Hy-Vee self-checkout

Galesburg Police on Sunday morning responded to Hy-Vee on East Main Street for an unwanted individual inside the store who had been previously banned. Officers arrived and met with employees. A 36-year-old Galesburg man, whom police and employees are familiar with, observed the man approach the self-checkout and scan numerous items. The man did not run his card or attempt to pay in cash and then departed. The man also left his cell phone behind at the self-checkout. Officers then made contact with the male suspect in the backyard of a residence. The man denied stealing the items and admitted to leaving his phone behind. He was taken into custody and charged with Retail Theft of less than $300. The same man was arrested and charged with Battery and Disorderly Conduct after an incident last Wednesday night at the East Main Street McDonald's.

An ongoing feud leads to charges after Galesburg man runs over another man after being threatened with a sword

Galesburg Police on Tuesday, around 10:00 am, responded to the 700 block of North Cedar Street for a report of a subject being struck by a vehicle. Police arrived on the scene and made contact with a 40-year-old man laying on the ground who advised to police that a 31-year-old male subject ran over his legs. The victim had tire tracks on his legs and there were tracks in the yard of the residence and a broken utility pole. A female witness showed officers a video that led up to the incident where the male suspect is seen driving by the residence while another male subject runs after the vehicle with a sword. According to police reports, after the male victim was run over, the male subject exited the SUV and began striking the man with a golf club. The altercation started due to an ongoing feud between all the parties involved. The victim suffered a fractured fibula in one of his legs and was transported to OSF in Peoria. At the scene, GPD took possession of the sword. The male suspect was taken into custody in the Baymont Hotel parking lot. He was transported to the Knox County Jail and charged with Aggravated Battery causing great bodily harm, Aggravated Battery with a weapon, Aggravated Reckless Driving, and Failure to Report an Accident.

Galesburg Police now dealing with a rash of license plates being stolen

On Thursday of last week, Galesburg Police responded to the 100 block of Allens Avenue after a 54-year-old man reported his rear license plate was stolen. The man told police his car was parked and slept inside it that night. The man gave police the name of a 44-year-old Galesburg man as a possible suspect. Galesburg Police on Friday spoke with a 56-year-old Galesburg woman who reported a pair of truck plates being stolen. The woman's 2008 Chevrolet Silverado had been parked in the 1200 block of East Main Street and sometime between the past three weeks, the plates were taken out of the truck's bed. Later on Friday morning, Galesburg Police responded to the 400 block of East Main for a theft. A 32-year-old Aledo woman realized her front license plate was missing. Also missing were both screws for the plate - leading police to believe it was stolen. Galesburg Police are also investigating after a 26-year-old woman reported both passenger side tires of her car were stolen in the 200 block of George Avenue on Thursday. Someone attempted to gain access to a Nissan at the same address. All four windows had been forcibly pushed down - and scuff marks were observed near a door. All the incidents remain under investigation.

Company SUV recovered; gun safe stolen from Illinois Avenue home

Galesburg Police on Saturday afternoon were dispatched to check on a suspicious vehicle that had been ditched in a wooded area at the end of Illinois Avenue. Officers were advised it was an American Val-You GMC Yukon. While en route, police were advised the business owner was reporting a burglary at his residence in the 100 block of Illinois Avenue. Police arrived and observed the SUV up against a tree in a wooded area off Illinois Avenue - no one was inside. Officers noted the back seats of the SUV were down as if the suspect was hauling something. Police then responded to the 48-year-old victim's residence where forced entry was made to a door and things were strewn about the house. Missing from the residence was a 6-foot by 3-foot gun safe. The safe contained numerous boxes of ammunition and magazines, an AR-15, as well as checkbooks and business credit cards. Police suspect the burglary happened sometime between 1:00pm and 4:00pm on Saturday. The SUV was held for processing. At the time of the report, GPD was in the process of reviewing any potential security footage from the area. The investigation is ongoing.
