Australian State Needs 11,000 More Public School Teachers Within the Next Decade

Australian State Needs 11,000 More Public School Teachers Within the Next Decade
New South Wales (NSW) will need to recruit thousands of new teachers in the next 10 years to meet the demand from record-high student enrolment numbers.
A new report (pdf) by economist Adam Rorris commissioned by the NSW Teachers Federation Union projects that public schools need to hire at least 11,000 additional teachers by 2031 to meet the surging number of kindergarten to year 12 enrolments.
However, the education department has found that the state already has existing teacher shortages, particularly in STEM fields and rural locations.
“This is projected to worsen due to a combination of student population increases, an ageing workforce, and fewer people going into teaching,” NSW Auditor-General Margaret Crawford said in an audit report from 2019 (pdf).

NSW needs thousands more teachers to fix shortage

NSW will need thousands of new teachers to meet burgeoning demand in the next decade as student numbers in public schools surge, the state's teachers' union says.
A union-commissioned report by education economist Adam Rorris found at least 11,000 new teachers need to be recruited by 2031, as the state deals with record enrolment growth.
The number of new teachers required rises to almost 14,000 if the student-teacher ratio is lowered to the national average, the research released on Tuesday reveals.
NSW Teachers Federation president Angelo Gavrielatos said NSW already had more students per teacher than any other state or territory in public primary and secondary schools.

Australia: Walgett teachers walk off the job over staffing shortages

Australia: Walgett teachers walk off the job over staffing shortages
Teachers at the Walgett Community College in northwestern New South Wales (NSW) walked off the job in protest at significant staffing issues last week. Currently, 11 out of 21 teaching positions remain unfilled at the school, creating intolerable conditions for staff and students.
The walkout is a sign of deepening discontent among teachers across the state and nationally. The Walgett teachers held a meeting before school last Wednesday and resolved to “down tools” at the commencement of classes. They returned to work after 20 minutes.
