When it comes to finding a significant other, things may look different for LGBTQ+ students at private Christian universities. Members of Gamma Alpha Upsilon, an unaffiliated LGBTQ+ advocacy group at Baylor, said being in an openly queer relationship is especially complicated at Baylor.
Baylor University is one of many institutions that have received religious exemptions to Title IX regulations.
Baylor's successful claim to religious exemptions from some federal Title IX measures against LGBTQ discrimination has led to calls by Congress for a federal review of harassment at the university.
“The university does not discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity or expression per se, but it does regulate conduct that is inconsistent with the religious values and beliefs that are integral to its Christian faith and mission,” Baylor’s letter said.
The conservative Christian school didn't like the expansion of Title IX's sexual harassment regulation to include anti-LGBTQ+ harassment.
