Crop Watch: Rain transforms crops, but heat is needed now >More in © Gary Naylor Crops are responding to the wet May and are moving on, but its warmth that is needed now to help maximise yields. Especially for maize. One notable feature being reported by our agronomists is the shortness of winter barley and winter bean crops. Short barley crops could have implications for livestock farmers. City man charged in two separate disturbances Brandon Hipple’s voice was so loud that it “could be heard echoing off the houses throughout the entire 1000 block of Baldwin Street,” according to an affidavit filed by city Patrolman Thomas Bortz. Officers were dispatched to Hipple’s home at 1027 Baldwin St. about 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 14 after two neighbors were awakened by Hipple “yelling at the top of his lungs,” Bortz said police were told. This had been going on for more than three hours beginning the night before, the officer said. Hipple, 29, came out of his house and threatened to “commit crimes of violence” towards his neighbors, Bortz alleged in court papers.

Garlic-based nematicide shows promise for Yorks root grower

Garlic-based nematicide shows promise for Yorks root grower >More in © Gary Naylor Photography The control of free-living and root-knot nematodes is a problem for many vegetable growers, particularly as the mainstay nematicide Vydate (oxamyl) was withdrawn from use last December. Despite its loss, a fully registered, granular nematicide formulated from garlic is proving effective in reducing nematode populations on one Yorkshire farm. Left untreated, the soil-borne microscopic pest feeds directly on crop roots, which distorts and disfigures the root known as “fanging”. This can lead to marketable yield losses of 30-40%, as crops fail to meet tight supermarket quality specifications.
