MANCHESTER, NH – A day after a fire destroyed a makeshift tent at a homeless encampment near the Amoskeag Bridge, the fire department posted a notice ordering everyone to leave due to “fire and life safety concerns.”
No one was injured in Wednesday’s fire at the encampment located under the bridge near Canal Street, across from the New Hampshire National Guard Armory.
Those who make the encampment their home – currently about 20 people – have until 6 p.m. Friday, February 5, 2021, to leave.  Although the posted notice said any unwanted personal property left behind would be disposed of, Fire Chief Dan Goonan said personal items that need to be temporarily stored will not be thrown away.

MANCHESTER, NH – Last year, nearly 1,400 people experienced homelessness on any given day in New Hampshire, according to the Continuum Care to the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development.
Sixty of them died, not necessarily on the street as in the case of Gary Silver, 64, who died Nov. 30 after a propane tank exploded in his tent in the woods off Willow Street.
Still, 27 of those 60 people were individuals residing in Manchester, all with no permanent homes at the time of their deaths.

Former Manchester police headquarters to be site of new homeless shelter

The former Manchester police headquarters on Chestnut Street will be used as a temporary emergency winter homeless shelter, according to a Families in Transition-New Horizons official.
The agreement ends a weeks-long scramble to find accommodations for the city’s homeless during the inclement months ahead.
In a memo to Manchester aldermen, CEO Maria Devlin said FIT-NH has been in talks with the owner of the property for a couple of weeks. For $18,000 a month, the organization will lease about 10,000 square feet on two floors at 351 Chestnut St., with enough space to have separate areas for day programming and beds.
The rent covers all utilities, including heat, officials said Thursday.
