While harvest for most crops in southern Alberta is just about wrapped up, sugar beets have now just started to come out of the ground.

"We grow 20,000 acres of sugar beets, we produce 125,000 tons of sugar, and that equates to eight per cent of the Canadian market," said Gary Tokariuk.

The province's two largest irrigators say a smaller than normal snowpack at the end of last winter, combined with high temperatures early in the spring and little to no rainfall throughout the summer, has left their systems with one of the lowest water levels in recent memory.
