Five weeks after the election, the definitive winner of Iowaâs 2nd Congressional District remains in question and the closest congressional race in decades may be headed to a decision by the Democratic-controlled U.S. House of Representatives. Republican state Sen. Mariannette Miller-Meeks of Ottumwa was declared Congresswoman-elect after state officials last week officially certified the election results. Miller-Meeks edged out Democratic former state senator Rita Hart of Wheatland by just six votes out of more than 400,000 cast following a district-wide recount in all 24 counties requested by Hart. Hartâs campaign on Wednesday, Dec. 2, announced plans to file a petition with the U.S. House Committee on Administration challenging the outcome and asking for a full review of all ballots cast in the race, bypassing Iowa courts. ....

This congressional race will live in history for its certified and amazingly slim 6-vote differential. It was a very methodical and legitimate ballot count, which is to be expected from our honorable state. Now Rita Hart wants to sully the name of Iowa, Iowa s governor and secretary of state, 24 county auditors and their staffs, and thousands of volunteer observers from both parties. It is reported that Hart is asking the U.S. House of Representatives to intervene in our election. ....
The right call Kudos to Rita Hart! Iowans deserve an accurate ballot count for the U.S. House in District 2. While an initial recount examined ballots that had not been counted correctly on Election Day, several counties did not conduct the full hand recount necessary to make sure every Iowanâs vote was counted. The recount process in Iowa used just three people per county to examine ballots, making it impossible to hand count every ballot over the course of two weeks. There remain thousands more ballots that have not been examined for voter intent at all. Hart had six days under the Iowa Code to appeal to Iowaâs legal system for redress after the certification. âIf 72 members of the recount boards could not do that in the time they had, then five members of a judicial panel could not do it in less than a week,â stated retired Iowa judge Gary D.
