Cargo ships equipped with massive rigid sails called WindWings could save a substantial amount of fuel, considering how much of the world's goods are transported by sea.
The total count at present is over 30 installations, according to Gavin Allwright of the International Windship Association.
Wind propulsion installations on large ships are on track to surpass the 50 mark in early 2024, Gavin Allwright, IWSA Secretary General said.
"It's going to [be] a lot more affordable."
The systems are generally delivering 5-20% in fuel consumption reduction, with the possibility to increase that rate to 30%.
