The buzz is coming; 17-year cicadas emerging soon (copy)

ANNAPOLIS — Get ready for an insect phenomenon seen every 17 years.
Experts from the Maryland Department of Agriculture and University of Delaware Cooperative Extension say the magicicada septendecim is only seen for a few weeks every 17 years and it starts in May.
“Depending on how warm it gets is how soon we’ll see them,” said Gaye Williams, an MDA entomologist.
And when they do emerge, it’s going to be epic.
“There will be hundreds of thousands, if not millions,” she said of the insect, which most will remember from the carpet of crunchy shells left behind in years past.

Cicadas: They're Loud, Gross and Harmless...and Coming to a Yard Near You

Warmer weather means longer days, cookouts and this year: cicadas. Those noisy, swarming bugs are expected to surface from their underground homes of 17 years as soon as it gets a little warmer.
The cicadas should make an appearance as soon as ground temperatures reach around 64 degrees. Montgomery County residents probably can already notice in the ground where these insects will emerge within the next few weeks, probably between mid-May to early June. Some in Montgomery County have already witnessed a cicada or two in their yards over the last few days.

Brood X cicadas to swarm Virginia, Maryland, DC

“We’re going to come close to, if not eclipse, a trillion cicadas,” said Mr. Shockley, collections manager for the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.
Brood X is one of 15 groups of “periodical” cicadas that lurk beneath the soil and feed on tree sap until they emerge en masse every 13 or 17 years.
Once weather conditions are just right, portions of 15 Northeastern states will be abuzz with a cacophony from males in search of mates. The show may go on for up to six weeks.
“They’re waiting for the temperature 8 inches below ground to reach 64 degrees,” Mr. Shockley said.
