Worldwide, governments are under pressure from the biotechnology and agrichemical industries to deregulate products developed using the so-called “new” genetic engineering techniques such as genome editing and gene silencing. A new paper describes how many of the new techniques are not new to science, but because of technical developments can now be applied to more species in less time and for more kinds of traits.

In search of stable and clean energy, Vietnam has put a strong focus on liquefied natural gas, which â though being a fossil fuel â promises to outrun coal with its higher cost efficiency and lower emissions. However, experts advise developing an efficient infrastructure and set out power purchase agreements that can attract the required investment.

GE Could Rebound to Levels Not Seen in More Than Three Years If It Clears This Hurdle, Trader Says

Bill Baruch, president of Blue Line Futures, says the charts suggest further upside.
"I'm looking at a lot of good technicals here," Baruch told CNBC's "Trading Nation" on Thursday. GE "last year made a new low but it held that 2009 low. It's recovered strongly and you've got this wedge right now that's really consolidating and it's holding the 50-day moving average very well."
Now, it needs to move out of this consolidation phase, says Baruch.
"If it can move out above this wedge, which it has started to do, and really get through that $14 to $14.50 area, the upside is $16.80 there which is where a lot of the selling pressure really kicked in back in 2018, so I think that's the sort of target," said Baruch.

New study points to unintended effects of gene editing in plants and potential negative effects on ecosystems
Gene editing causes drastic unwanted effects in gene-edited plants including severe deformities, a new scientific publication in the journal Environmental Sciences Europe shows. This is the case even when the changes are intended by the gene editor to be small tweaks to existing genes rather than, for example, the introduction of new genetic material.
More broadly, the study provides an overview of the negative effects on ecosystems that can result from the release of gene-edited plants. These unintended effects result from the intended changes induced by genome editing, which can affect various metabolic processes in the plants.

GM waxy maize: The gene-edited Trojan Horse is moving through the gates
A successful introduction in the US will set the stage for commercial cultivation and imports in other countries
The Canadian Biotechnology Action Network (CBAN) has published a product profile of Corteva's gene-edited waxy maize here.

At least five countries - Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile and the US - have approved a variety of maize genetically modified (GM) with a genome editing technique called CRISPR, without subjecting the crop to the risk assessments and regulations for GM crops. Other countries could soon follow.
The GM maize is produced by US-based Corteva, the world's second largest seed company and fourth largest pesticides company. Corteva describes the variety as a "waxy corn" which, like conventional waxy corn varieties, produces a starch high in amylopectin and low in amylose. In this case, Corteva used genetic engineering to knock out the genes responsible for producing amylose from its non-waxy hybrid maize varieties.
